Our Educational Approach
Helping Every Child Experience a Thriving School Community
Every child deserves to experience a school community where they feel they belong, are encouraged to participate, have opportunities to contribute and can positively influence the experiences of others.
At Our House Spirit, we believe these experiences don't happen by chance. They are intentionally developed through meaningful opportunities for children to connect, contribute, lead and strengthen their House Community.
Our Guiding Belief
Children learn how to strengthen communities by actively experiencing them.
Everything we do at Our House Spirit is guided by this belief. Every workshop, House experience and leadership opportunity is designed to create meaningful opportunities for children to participate, receive from others, contribute and positively influence the experiences of those around them.
Developing Community Capability
Our Educational Approach is centred around developing Community Capability.
Community Capability is the knowledge, skills and dispositions children develop through actively participating in community.
We believe children develop Community Capability through four interconnected experiences.

Children actively engage in meaningful experiences that strengthen relationships and shared purpose.

Children receive encouragement, support, connection and opportunities from the communities they belong to.

Children learn to create experiences that strengthen belonging, participation and connection for those around them.
What We Believe
Student Leadership as Positive Influence
A thriving school community is built through the everyday experiences children share together.
When children are given meaningful opportunities to participate, they develop relationships, confidence and a stronger sense of belonging.
As they receive encouragement and support from others, they begin to recognise the value of community.
When they contribute to share experiences, they discover that their actions matter.
And when they positively influence the experiences of others, they begin developing authentic leadership.
These experiences help shape not only the communities children belong to today, but the communities they will help build throughout their lives.
At Our House Spirit, we believe student leadership is not defined by a badge, title or position.
Student leadership is the opportunity and responsibility to positively influence the
experiences of others.
Authentic leadership is developed when children are trusted with real responsibility.
Whether they are welcoming younger students, gathering Student Voice, planning House activities or leading whole-school experiences, children learn leadership by applying it in meaningful ways.
Leadership becomes something children do - not simply something they are recognised for.
Why House Communities Matter
House Communities provide authentic opportunities for children to connect across year levels, develop relationships and contribute to something bigger than themselves.
They create a sense of shared identity while encouraging participation, inclusion and belonging.
More importantly, they provide practical opportunities for children to develop Community Capability through meaningful shared experiences.
House Communities are not simply organisational structures.
They are communities where children learn how to participate, contribute and
positively influence others.
Student Voice That Leads to Action
Listening to students is important.
Helping student see their ideas become reality is transformative.
We believe Student and Community Voice should lead to meaningful action.
When children have opportunities to share ideas, solve problems, plan experiences and contribute to decisions that affect their school community, they learn that their voice has purpose.
This helps develop confidencee, responsibility and a genuine sense of ownership within their school community.
Student Voice becomes most powerful when it creates opportunities fro participation, contribution and positive influence.
The Power of Meaningful Childhood Experiences
Some of the most significant learning happens beyond the classroom.
Children remember the experiences that helped them feel connected.
The moments they contributed to something meaningful.
The encouragement they received from others.
The responsibility they were trusted to carry.
The opportunity to make a positive difference.
These experiences shape how children see themselves, how they relate to others and how they participate in communities throughout their lives.
This is why every workshop, House activity, leadership experience and whole-school initiative we create is designed with educational purpose.
The experience itself is the learning.
Bringing Our Educational Approach to Life
Educational philosophy is most powerful when it is experienced.
At Our House Spirit, we partner with schools to intentionally create opportunities for children to develop Community Capability through authentic participation, leadership and shared experiences.
